Bitcoin protocol Ordinals has introduced Recursive Inscriptions, which allows referencing other inscriptions using special syntax, making the creation of inscriptions smaller and more cost-effective. On June 12th, Raph, the new chief maintainer of the Bitcoin protocol Ordinals, merged Casey Rodarmor’s “Recursive Inscription #2167” into the Ordinals code on Github. Subsequently, one of the anonymous developers of Ordinals, Leonidas.og, introduced the related content of “Recursive Inscription” in a tweet. Recursive Inscription is a way of engraving on the blockchain that can break the embarrassing situation in previous engraving methods where each inscription is independent and not related, and opens up the possibility of free combination through its self-referential feature. In short, Recursive Inscription is an inscription that requests the content of other inscriptions.
According to developer Leonidas.og’s interpretation, inscriptions can now use the special syntax “/-/content/:inscription_id” to request the content of other inscriptions, allowing users to create inscriptions on the Bitcoin chain with less capacity and lower fees. The syntax used by Recursive Inscription is essentially using text code to find images. PFP collection inscriptions can be created by uploading corresponding features of the image, such as patterns, colors, actions, and combining and splicing existing corresponding elements on the chain without uploading or downloading images.

As it is in the form of calling text code, Recursive Inscription has a small volume, greatly reducing the cost, and can also break the 4MB block size limit of the Bitcoin blockchain. The high flexibility, combinability, and low cost advantages of Recursive Inscription bring unlimited new possibilities to inscriptions, enabling complex forms of content such as images, videos, 3D games, etc. to be engraved on the chain. Recursive Inscription makes it possible to establish an internal Internet. More possibilities include secondary creation of inscriptions, decentralized GitHub, NFT combination fragmentation, and so on.
